Matthew Thompson is
a writer and adventurer who has covered such topics as nudist colonies,
women’s
boxing, professional pool hustling, drag racing, French dining in Tokyo,
and war. He has run from Iranian riot police in Tehran, rumbled with
Colombian gangs in Medellin, eaten sardines with Maoist rebels in the
mountains of Luzon in the northen Philippines, explored the Muslim insurgencies
of the southern Philippines, drinking coffee with Abu Sayyaf bomb-makers
and eating raw goat with their foes in the Marines.
He was born in the USA but educated in Australia, where he was awarded
the University Medal in literature at Newcastle University and a doctorate
in creative arts by the University of Western Sydney. He has worked as
a reporter at the Sydney Morning Herald and writes for a range
of magazines and newspapers. Thompson has a broken nose and a volatile
little dog named Noodles.
